Labor Market Spotlight: Downtown Dallas / Uptown

The number of attorneys and other professional and technical service-related occupations — auditors, financial advisors, management analysts, and market research/marketing specialists — working in downtown Dallas has been climbing fast. So has the number of software developers and computer systems analysts. Jobs of those types are projected to grow in Dallas’ Central Business District faster than the national average.

These types of jobs pay exceptionally well — ranging from high $80s to mid-$100s on average — far outpacing the average annual wages for all occupations in Downtown-Uptown Dallas. Regardless of pay, more than a quarter of all downtown area workers’ homes are less than 10 miles from the workplace. And nearly half live 10 to 24 miles from their jobs.

Nearly one in five of all employees in the downtown area work in professional, scientific or technical services; nationwide, they make up only about 7 percent of the workforce.

Major employers in the Downtown-Uptown Dallas business area include major consulting and advisory firms like PwC, Deloitte, KPMG, and EY; finance and banking employers like Comerica, Santander, ORIX, and the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; and legal services firms like Thompson & Knight, Winstead, and Jones Day.

Lawyers, especially, have a bright outlook for job growth in the Dallas region. Over the next 10 years, economists project that the number of attorney jobs will increase by about 20 percent — from 17,408 to 20,880. And there is virtual full-employment for lawyers; they have a .5 percent unemployment rate. Downtown Dallas even has its own law school — the University of North Texas College of Law, which de-emphasizes LSAT scores in the admissions process and seeks to prepare lawyers for public service practices, such as criminal legal defense, at lower-than-average tuition costs.
